Questions & Answers
WHERE
ARE WE?
We
don't actually have a base or shelter.
All calls come through the Helpline; manned by the Branch
Co-ordinator/Homing & Welfare Officer.
All the
cats/kittens for rehoming are housed with Fosterers, and are all in
Milton Keynes
.
The
Branch also has a number of Cat Workers and Home Visitors, who are called
upon when needed.
WHEN
I CALL WHY DO I OFTEN GET THE ANSWER PHONE?
The
majority of Cat Workers, Home Visitors and Fosterers work full time as
does the Co-ordinator/Homing &
Welfare Officer, who mans the phone line.
If you leave a brief message, your call will be returned as soon as
possible (usually later the same day).
The
Branch is run purely by volunteers. No
one is paid for the work they undertake. We rely totally on donations,
membership subscriptions and fundraising.
WHAT AREA DO WE COVER?
We cover Milton Keynes, Buckingham, Olney, Newport Pagnell, Winslow,
Woburn Sands and villages surrounding these towns (postcodes MK1 to MK19
and parts of MK43 and MK46). See map.
WHAT
DO WE DO?
A Cat
Worker checks out such cats, and details are then checked against our Lost
& Found Register. Those
cats who prove to be true strays are then placed on the waiting list for
admission.
All
such cats are looked after by a Fosterer until a new home is found.
The
Home Visitor gives advice on general cat care, and new owners are given an
Information Pack. The Home Visitor also establishes whether the people and
home are suitable and advises on the type of cat that would fit in with
them; depending on circumstances such as whether or not they work, have
children or other pets.
We home
approximately 170 cats/kittens per year, over a third of whom need
neutering and veterinary treatment prior to homing.
These
cats will have been checked by a Cat Worker, scanned for a microchip and
checked against the Lost & Found Register. Once neutered, if
necessary, or treated for any illness, these cats are then taken on by the
person reporting them.
We help
towards the cost of neutering approximately a further 130 cats per year,
with the use of vouchers, which are issued to the Branch by Cats
Protection Headquarters (to be used at our discretion). If you would
like help with neutering, please call or text 07841 046527 or email publicity@mkcats.org.uk.
Checking
out each stray cat reported, combined with checking through the Lost &
Found Register, enables us to reunite approximately 25 cats per year with
their rightful owners.
